Celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2008 was a New York Voices milestone; a testament to their artistry and respect in the industry. NYV is the Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble renowned for their extraordinary scope of music and the art of group singing. With their critically acclaimed self-titled debut on GRP records in 1989, the Voices established themselves on the cutting edge of vocal ensemble singing, breathing new life into a genre pioneered in the late 50's by Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross. Tight arrangements, intimate voicings, and dare-devil scatting are all New York Voices trademarks, and are beautifully showcased on their subsequent releases: Hearts of Fire (1991 - GRP), What's Inside (1993 - GRP), The NYV Collection (1995 - GRP), New York Voices Sing the Songs of Paul Simon (1998 - RCA Victor), Sing! Sing! Sing! (2001 - Concord) and A Day Like This (2007 – MCG Jazz).
The New York Voices are: Darmon Meader, Peter Eldridge, Kim Nazarian and Lauren Kinhan. The Voices have performed in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Blue Note Jazz Clubs (New York, Milan, Tokyo), and the North Sea, Montreal, and Cape Town Jazz Festivals. They perform most often with their instrumental trio, as well as with orchestras and big bands worldwide. The Voices have performed with a variety of artists including Ray Brown, Patti Austin, George Benson, the Metropole Orchestra, the Boston Pops, the WDR Big Band, and the Count Basie Orchestra. They continue to tour with both Paquito D’Rivera and Ivan Lins, presenting two independent programs of outstanding Brazilian music.
In addition
to their own CDs, NYV has made many guest artist appearances on recordings
that have earned them critical acclaim and demand in a variety of musical
settings. You can find their performances on such CDs as the Grammy
Award winning, Count Basie Orchestra with New York Voices, Live at
Manchester Craftsmen's Guild (MCG Records), the Latin Grammy Award
winning, Brazilian Dreams with Paquito D'Rivera, the contemporary
classical, Visions Within (Robert Lepley - MSR Records),
Heirs to Jobim (BMG Records), Don Sebesky's, I Remember Bill
(BMG), Jim Hall's, By Arrangement
(Telarc), A Love Affair - the Music of Ivan Lins
(TELARC) and many more.
In addition
to their jazz roots, the Voices continue to explore other contemporary
musical genres with their own original compositions and unique interpretations
of Pop, R & B, and Brazilian classics. On an individual level, all
four of the Voices have developed solo projects that demonstrate each
of their exceptional musical gifts. With enthusiastic audiences
around the world, rave reviews, and exciting new music on the horizon,
the New York Voices have established themselves as the premier
vocal ensemble — the heirs to a rich vocal legacy that they continue
to explore and refine.
